The Victorian dining chairs and antique bookcases of the Charles Dickens Museum are usually “no touch” exhibits – except when the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall visit. On 7th February, they settled into two comfortable library armchairs once used by Dickens himself, while actress Gillian Anderson read to them from behind an antique desk.
Preston residents needed no reminder that 7th February 2012 marked Charles Dickens’ 200th birthday. The Prince and Duchess led the celebrations with a tour of 48 Doughty Street; Dickens’ only surviving London home and now the Charles Dickens Museum.
